“How do I transition my family?…& a recipe for ‘Clam Chowder’.”

♥Hi Friends!

I think one of the greatest challenges in making the switch to plant-based eating is transitioning our families.  It was a huge roadblock for me.

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, many experts in the field feel that making a change should be done “cold turkey”.  And if I was faced with a debilitating or urgent health crisis, or if I was doing this on my own, knowing what I know now, I would.

But this post is about helping those in your household come along on your journey, or you if you yourself want to make the transition gradually.  Hopefully these ideas will make the path less painful, not only for them but you!  And in the end, a lasting way of life.

1♥ DON’T TELL THEM.  My #1 came up with this one as she watched me get all excited when I first started learning about plant-based eating.  I was trying to make a sweeping change in our diets and get everyone on board with this completely new way of thinking and eating.  (It didn’t work.  Hence the post!)  She was doing the same thing at her house but she thinks much more logically than I.  I’m sure she looked on in confusion wondering why I was making this so hard on myself and her poor father and siblings left at home.  One day she said something like this to me (after it was too late might I add), “Don’t tell them Mom.  It just gets them upset.”  BRILLIANT!

2♥ START WITH GREEN SMOOTHIES.*  Click here and here for reasons and ideas from my previous posts on Green Smoothies.

3♥  INTRODUCE NEW DINNER MEALS.  Try a new HEALING recipe and if they like it, add it to the rotation.  If they don’t, put it aside because as we HEAL, our tastes change and what they don’t like now, they may like later.  One of the goals for my blog is to share new recipes and meal ideas.  I’ve also listed some good resources on my EMPOWERING page at the top on the yellow tool bar.  Or just Google “plant-based eating recipes” and try something out.

So remember how to eat and elephant, educate yourself, keep praying for help, and watch how inspiration from the Spirit will help change and HEAL you and those you love!

♥Love you!

*Numbers 2 and 3 can be switched if you aren’t set up with a reliable blender.

Here’s the last of the three soups we served at our women’s conference.  My daughter found this recipe in the “GreenSmoothieGirl.com Readers’ Favorite  Healthy Recipes-Vol 2”.  It is SO easy, whips up quick.  My family LOVES this one and they don’t even miss the dairy!

CLAM CHOWDER

  • 3  6 oz cans clams
  • 6 cups diced yellow potatoes
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 cup onion, finely diced
  • 2 cups plain rice milk
  • 1/3 cup raw cashews
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • black pepper to taste

Put vegetables in pot.  (I use my dutch oven size).  Pour juice off of clams and put in with vegetables.  Finish covering with water. Boil, covered, until vegetables are tender.  Remove 2 cups of cooked vegetables (without much liquid) and put in high powered blender along with milk, cashews and salt.  Blend until thick and smooth.  Return to pot and add clams and black pepper.  Adjust salt if needed.
